Voyage of Ceylon

Pasikuda

Pasikuda is renowned for the most extraordinary shallow, calm waters on the entire island. The reef-protected lagoon stretches for hundreds of metres at barely knee-depth, making it uniquely suited to families and those seeking a tranquil, resort-style beach experience in an untouched setting.

Trincomalee

Trincomalee is Sri Lanka’s great eastern treasure – a deep natural harbour, sacred Hindu temples perched on sea cliffs, and clear waters that rank among the best for diving and snorkelling in Asia. Pigeon Island just offshore offers a coral reef that remains remarkably pristine.

Arugam Bay

On Sri Lanka’s east coast, Arugam Bay is a legendary surf destination – rated among the best right-hand point breaks in the world. Beyond the surf, the bay has a distinctly relaxed, barefoot atmosphere and sits close to national parks, lagoons, and elephant corridors that offer remarkable wildlife encounters.

Weligama

Weligama is the perfect place to learn to surf – the long, gentle beach break is forgiving for beginners, and the town has a warm, welcoming energy. It is also one of the south coast’s most charming coastal towns, with excellent food and a growing creative scene.

Mirissa

Mirissa is Sri Lanka’s whale-watching capital and a favourite haunt of travellers who want a small, beautiful beach with a great atmosphere. The bay is perfectly formed, the sunsets are spectacular, and the blue whale sightings offshore between November and April are genuinely extraordinary.

Galle

Galle is far more than a beach – it is a living Dutch colonial fortress city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of Sri Lanka’s most atmospheric places. Its cobblestone streets, boutique hotels, artisan shops, and rampart sunsets make it the island’s most cultured coastal destination.

Unawatuna

A sheltered, crescent-shaped bay framed by jungle-covered headlands, Unawatuna is one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful beaches. The calm, clear water makes it ideal for swimming and snorkelling, while the beachside restaurants and relaxed vibe make it easy to simply stay and savour the setting.

Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is one of Sri Lanka’s most beloved coastal towns – a laid-back beach strip known for its coral reef, sea turtles, and easy surf break. It has a natural, unhurried energy that makes it the kind of place people arrive for two nights and stay for five.

Bentota

Bentota is Sri Lanka’s water sports capital – a calm river estuary meets a wide beach stretch, creating ideal conditions for jet skiing, windsurfing, and boat safaris. It also hosts some of the island’s most elegantly positioned beach resorts, making it a favourite for both adventure and relaxation.

Negombo

A classic first stop for arrivals, Negombo pairs a long sandy beach with a vibrant fishing community and a lively lagoon. Its proximity to the airport makes it ideal for a relaxed opening or closing night, and its seafood – served fresh from the morning catch – is some of the best on the island.
