Destinations

One Island. Infinite Worlds.

Sri Lanka is an island of remarkable contrasts – ancient ruins and pristine beaches, mist-covered mountains and sun-drenched coasts, wildlife-filled jungles and serene highland meadows. No two regions feel the same, and no single journey covers it all. The destinations listed here represent the best of what this extraordinary island has to offer, each with its own personality, its own stories, and its own reasons to visit.

Where History Has Never Stopped Breathing.

Sri Lanka’s cultural heartland holds some of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. These destinations carry the weight of ancient kingdoms, sacred relics, and living traditions that have survived millennia. To travel here is to walk through history – not as a museum, but as a place that still pulses with meaning.

Jaffna

Jaffna is a city of distinct culture, deeply Tamil heritage, and a coastline unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka. Its colonial forts, Hindu temples, island-dotted lagoon, and rich culinary traditions offer a travel experience that feels fascinatingly different from the south. Jaffna rewards the genuinely curious traveller with authenticity and warmth in equal measure.

Sigiriya / Dambulla

Sigiriya is one of Asia’s most dramatic ancient sites – a fifth-century royal citadel built atop a volcanic rock that rises 200 metres from the jungle floor. Nearby Dambulla offers a series of cave temples filled with centuries of sacred murals and statues carved directly into the rock. Together, they form one of the island’s most compelling day journeys.

Kandy

Kandy is Sri Lanka’s last royal capital and cultural soul – a city of cool highland air, a sacred lake, and the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which holds Buddhism’s most treasured object. Surrounded by lush hills and home to traditional dance, craft, and ceremony, Kandy rewards those who take time to explore beyond the temple gates.

Polonnaruwa

The medieval capital of Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa is a remarkably well-preserved ancient city set around a vast man-made reservoir. Its iconic stone carvings, including the famous Gal Viharaya rock sculptures, are among the finest examples of Buddhist art in Asia. Exploring the ruins by bicycle remains one of the most pleasurable travel experiences the island offers.

Anuradhapura

Sri Lanka’s first ancient capital, Anuradhapura is a sprawling sacred city of towering dagobas, sacred bodhi trees, and monastery ruins that span more than 2,500 years. The Sri Maha Bodhi – a direct descendant of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment – stands at its spiritual core. This is a city of extraordinary scale and profound religious significance, best explored slowly and with a knowledgeable guide.
